Discover Moore Australia's Work Experience program

Tégan Watkin-Brown Work Experience reflection

What are you currently studying?

I am currently in my penultimate year studying a Bachelor of Business at QUT, majoring in accounting.

What was the process to secure a position with Moore and what did you have to do?

I secured a placement at Moore through the CA Achiever program, which provides accounting students with practical work experience opportunities. At the initial application process, I was asked to provide a resume and outline my interests in various accounting fields. I then completed psychometric tests and presented a recorded interview. Based on this application, I was matched with Moore Australia in business advisory services based at the Beenleigh office, where I had an in-person interview and received a placement offer.

How would you describe the office and working environment?

Being in an office was a new experience for me, as it was my first time working in a professional environment. The team are truly kind and supportive of one another, which fosters such a positive working environment. I have gained insight into how information and data flows throughout the firm, and the high degree of collaboration that takes place throughout this process.

What has been the highlight of the work experience program?

The highlight of this experience has been the relationships I have gained during the period. The team have been incredibly welcoming, which has made the experience even more enjoyable. The program has also been valuable in allowing me to understand the real-life application of theory that I have learnt throughout my university studies.

Describe a typical day.

Something unique and valuable about this experience is that no day has been the same. I have explored various functions related to accounting, administration, bookkeeping, corporate compliance, HR and marketing. Being given the opportunity to be mentored by different people each day has broadened my understanding of business processes and the accounting profession.

What is something that you have learnt about yourself?

With this being my first office experience, I have learnt that strong workplace culture and building connections with colleagues is something that I strongly value. This is something that I will now take into consideration when applying for graduate positions and throughout my professional life. The experience has challenged me to get out of my comfort zone and meet new people, which has demonstrated that I am less shy and reserved than I had previously thought.

How has this experience influenced your career path?

The experience has demonstrated the extensive variety of areas in the accounting profession. Speaking to different people and learning about the various roles available has assisted me in deciding what I may potentially pursue after uni.

What advice would you give to someone interested in a work experience position with Moore?

I would encourage students interested in work experience with Moore to be open minded and embrace every available opportunity. While it may initially feel intimidating, asking questions and forming connections with the team will help to maximise the learning outcomes of the program and progress your skillset.
