Director Identification Number: Time is running out

Director Identification Number: Time is running out

Moore Australia

Director Identification Numbers (DIN) are required for all current Directors.  You must apply for a DIN before 30 November 2022.

If you haven't applied for your DIN you will need to do so before 30 November 2022 deadline to avoid the risk of penalties. The requirement for officeholders to have a Director ID by the deadline is detailed within section 1272 of the legislation, with potential penalties for non-compliance being fines of up to $13,200 (criminal) and $1,100,000 (civil).

Whilst we cannot complete the application on your behalf, we can provide assistance if required.

WHO NEEDS A DIN?

You need a Director ID if you’re an eligible officer of:

  • a company, registered Australian body, or registered foreign company under the Corporations Act 2001 (Corporations Act)

  • an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation registered under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (CATSI Act).

An eligible officer is a person who is appointed as either:

  • a director

  • an alternate director who is acting in that capacity.

You will only ever need one Director ID. You don’t have to apply for another one if you become a director of other companies or corporations.

You must apply for your own Director ID to verify your identity. No one can apply on your behalf.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Directors need to set up myGovID if they do not already have one. If you are a company director who does not have myGovID, you can find information on how to download the app here. This link includes some additional information that you may find helpful.

Please be aware that myGovID is separate to myGov. If you cannot get a myGovID online, you can apply by phone or through a paper form.

To set up myGovID, please see the following steps:

  • Download the app to your personal smart phone from either the App Store or Google Play

  • Enter your details. You need to enter your full name, date of birth and personal email address

  • Choose your identity strength.  You will need a minimum of Standard for the Director Identification Number application.  For a Standard identity strength, you need to enter your personal details and verify at least two of the following Australian identity documents (your name must match on both):

    • driver’s licence or learner’s permit

    • passport (not more than three years expired)

    • birth certificate

    • visa (using your foreign passport)

    • citizenship certificate

    • ImmiCard

    • Medicare card.

Once your myGovID has been set up, the Director Identification Number can then be applied for. The link for the application for the number is: https://www.abrs.gov.au/.

Choose the 'Director Identification Number' tab and then click the teal box Apply Now. When applying for a Director ID Number, you will need to upload documents to verify your identity, see link:

Individuals will need at least 2 from the following list:
